Unintended/Intended Audiences

My Little Pony has been a well known girl's toy since 1983. These toys are usually used for ages between 3 and 6 years old. Their intended audience is a little girl. In the toy packaging, it includes the pony and usually hair accessories so the girls could brush their pony's hair. Obviously each package has different accessories but most of them have these hair accessories to intend the audience towards a girl. It also displays colors (pink, purple, yellow, etc.) that a girl would like which attracts the girl's attention towards the product. It also reaches the intended audience by making the package and the pony small so it could fit a little girl's hands if she wants to hold her prized possession as she walks through the store, bring it to school, or even to other places. In the store, the My Little Pony toys are usually near the middle or bottom of the shelf which is easier for the child to see. However, many people do not realize that the company's actual audience would be the parents because they are the ones buying the toy for their child. For example, in their commercials, it always has a happy girl playing with the pony, brushing its hair, playing with other My Little Pony products (castle, carriage, hot air balloon, carousel, etc.) and saying positive comments on the toy like "I love you my little pony" (from the 1980s commercial). This happy, positive girl tells the parent that they can trust this toy and ends up buying a multitude of products. Because of how successful they reached their unintended audience, the company has created more pony characters (so of course each child can collect them all), books, games, movies, television shows, clothes, backpacks, and even a bed set! This company has mastered their audiences with these strategies.
